Did a little work to get the old goat down some more. Removed the sumpguard and fittings and went to work shortening the aluminium bushes that insert into the subframe.
Basically I want to remove the lower flange which goes in between the guard and subframe. Heres the theory:

It was a pain in the ass to cut but i managed it in the end by screwing it to the bench.
Which left me with this spacer that will go back on but in between the crossmember and guard on the front two fixings. Hopefully that will pivot the guard so it doesnt come into contact with the sump itself.
We shall see. Fingers crossed.
